What is a GP federation?
A GP federation is a group of general practices or surgeries forming an organisational entity and working together within the local health economy. The remit of a GP federation is generally to share responsibility for delivering high quality, patient-focused services for its communities.
The aim of a GP Federation is to work together in the local area to coordinate and design services to meet local needs. By working together as a group, it gives practices the opportunity to offer patients more options for care and treatments than any one individual practice can offer.
They provide an additional opportunity to improve services and develop new ones at scale.
There are around 200 GP Federations in England. The size of these can vary across the country, with some federations formed of around ten practices covering patient populations of 200,000 and others that have as many as 85 practices supporting over 600,000 patients.
