Case study 1, 70-year-old lady
The service user has no family in the UK, and a few friends and has been too ill to go out to visit them for the last few years.
She is a very sociable, chatty person who misses having company. She is a moderate hoarder and lives in a small flat. The clients’ previous volunteer support moved away from the area, and since then her health has deteriorated and her mobility has declined. Thankfully she was placed with a new volunteer.
What outcomes were achieved?
Age UK Wandsworth previously helped the client with advice and information and arranged for the support of a volunteer befriender. We introduced her to the new volunteer in Feb 2025 and they hit it off right away, arranging to see each other weekly.
The client found it immensely useful to connect with someone again and to have regular company and short walks outside. Both client and volunteer originate from countries outside the UK and therefore found common interests and experiences to talk about.
Feedback on the service
The client has reported that all is well. She said that she is enjoying the company of her volunteer.
Case study 2 – 66-year-old man who lives alone
The service user has one sister, who lives abroad. He visited Age UK’s Wandsworth office to receive a benefits check and other advice, as he is struggling financially and with daily life due to a range of health conditions which has impacted his mobility and independence.
What outcomes were achieved?
Age UK were able to help the client register for their online shopping service and he is now placing food orders every three weeks. This removes the worry of getting his groceries and brings a social aspect to his life as he likes to have a chat when placing his orders.
A grab rail was installed for him in his bathroom so he can use it safely. Also, a key safe was installed so his carers can come in while he is resting. All the support offered has contributed hugely to his independence and wellbeing, it has allowed him to relieve pressure from his financial and health situation.
