As part of National Bone and Joint Week (12-18 October), we’re proud to shine a spotlight on our Musculoskeletal Interface Clinical Assessment Service (MICAS).
The service provides expert assessment and management for patients with complex bone, joint, and soft tissue conditions.
Did you know…
👉 The multidisciplinary team is made up of five Advanced Practice Physiotherapists and three GPs.
👉 They manage close to 300 new referrals every month.
👉 Over the past three to four years, demand for the service has steadily increased, reflecting both the growing complexity of cases and the trust placed in the team’s expertise.
👉 Clinics are held over two sites – at Mayfield Surgery, Roehampton and Bolingbroke Medical Centre, Battersea
👉 Our patient surveys show consistently high satisfaction with the service.
The team is proud to work closely with a range of partners, including St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Vita Health Group, Cora Health, COPE and Surrey Physiotherapy to provide coordinated, patient-centred care. It also involves working with other local MSK services to discuss complex cases and review patients they refer to us.
One of our key strengths is direct access to imaging — enabling clinicians to review scans alongside patients during consultations. This not only supports shared decision-making but also helps them better understand their condition, something they frequently identify as valuable in feedback.
Several team members are also developing enhanced skills in injection therapy and diagnostic ultrasound, allowing us to deliver more timely assessments and treatment options within the community.
Through advanced clinical expertise, close multidisciplinary working, and a focus on patient education, MICAS continues to make a significant contribution to improving musculoskeletal health, reducing waiting times, and supporting high-quality, person-centred care across the local community.
